There are people in this world that can take a dead plant and bring it back to life and not only will it live but it will flourish. Sadly I am not one of those people. I LOVE plants. My favorite variety are the showy and beautiful Rex Begonias. I would have them all over the place if I didn’t manage to kill every single one I’ve ever purchased.
Here’s what happens in my plant life:
I buy a gorgeous plant, research how to care for it and do my best to do what I’m supposed to in order to have a live and lovely plant friend.
A month later I notice things aren’t looking so great. I ask my mother what I should do (she has a neon green thumb) about it and then follow her advice.
Finally, a few months after the purchase of this beautiful plant when it has been reduced to a brown shell of its former glory I give up and take it to my mother to nurse back to life.
Can you guess what happens now? Yep, that’s right. The plant perks up. It returns to a glorious green color and actually gets bigger <gasp!>.
This happens EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
WTH is wrong with me that I can’t grow a darn plant?
Regardless of my past failures I do occasionally still attempt a new plant in my home. The featured photo is of my latest purchase. I went to my favorite plant haven in Chico, The Plant Barn and picked this tiny little beauty up because I fell in love with the assortment of plants and how bright green they were.
It’s been two weeks and so far I haven’t killed it. I’m hopeful that perhaps my lifelong black thumb is rethinking itself and is contemplating changing colors much like the mood rings of the 70’s. I would hate to hand this one over to my mom only to go back two weeks later to see it the size of my head (which I know it would be!), so I’m going to baby it like I did my own human children and pray for the best.
I’ll keep you posted on developments of the green variety and I hope maybe I’ve inspired you to go get a new bit of greenery for your home. Not only are plants beautiful but many of them can clean the air so you are getting double duty from your new housemate.

Life as I Live it 
Don’t give up! Sometimes it’s tricky, but plants are so worth it! From flowers to greenery, to scents and like you said – fresh air! One trick I found is adding good healthy soil to store bought plants. Often they come in soil that is “used up” – devoid of good nutrients because they were all used up in growing the plant. When you re-pot the plant for your house, mix in some healthy soil so the plant has more to draw on!

The best part of gardening that truly makes a difference is building a relationship with your plants as they grow. If this one doesn’t work out, I recommend succulents, as they are very forgiving. Best of luck on your latest purchase!
